Johnno's is one of the Hunter Valley's most storied sites, a single block of ungrafted, own-rooted Shiraz planted in 1908 on deep, sandy alluvial soil, among the oldest continuously producing vines in Australia. The 2022 shows deep cherry and dark plum fruit with a fine dusting of warming spice, the palate fruit-focused yet supple and open-textured rather than dense, layered with redcurrant, pomegranate, raspberry and a savoury twist of red apple skin. Fine, grainy tannin and the Hunter's trademark refreshing acidity carry the wine to an impressively long finish, a style built on restraint rather than weight. Drinking beautifully already alongside roast duck or char-grilled quail, it also has the structure to develop gracefully through the 2030s and beyond.
