The Armagh is Jim Barry's flagship, a single-vineyard Clare Valley Shiraz first planted in 1968 and consistently ranked among Australia's great collectible reds. This 2016, presented in magnum, opens with a deep, brooding bouquet of blackberry compote, dark cherry and liquorice, layered with cocoa, cedar, roasted spice and a whisper of cured meat. The palate is full-bodied and commanding: dense black fruit framed by firm, refined tannin, with dark chocolate, espresso, violets and graphite unfolding through a long, structurally serious finish. A decade on from vintage the wine is entering a beautiful drinking window, though its tannic backbone and the slow, even evolution afforded by magnum format mean it has decades of life still ahead. A cellar centrepiece, best poured alongside aged Wagyu, venison or a well-hung rib of beef, and decanted several hours before serving.
