Izway 'Don' Shiraz 2023

Sourced from a single old-vine parcel on Adrian Hoffmann's Ebenezer vineyard in the Barossa's north, the 2023 Don opens with a lifted, earthy perfume of Aperol bitterness, ripe raspberry and dark chocolate, shot through with a savoury whisper of jamon and cracked black pepper. The palate is dense but disciplined, layers of black fruit and baking spice held in check by assertive, fine-grained tannin and a thread of crisp acidity that keeps the wine honest rather than heavy. There is real power here, worn with restraint, finishing long, savoury and faintly saline. Built from a cooler, more classical Ebenezer harvest, it rewards fifteen to twenty years in a good cellar, though its structure handles a solid decant tonight just as well. Pour alongside slow-cooked lamb shoulder, venison or a well-aged hard cheese.
