Clos de Beze sits at the very top of Gevrey-Chambertin's grand cru hierarchy, and in Armand Rousseau's hands the 2018 is a wine of real pedigree. The nose is perfumed and layered, red berry fruit laced with undergrowth, rose petal, incense and a fine dusting of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied but far from slight, with intense dark cherry fruit, refreshing acidity and the kind of filigreed, fine-grained tannin that only the very best Burgundy sites deliver. Several years on from vintage the wine is beginning to open out, its structure softening while retaining real freshness and cut. Best enjoyed from now through the mid-2030s, decanted an hour or two ahead to let its aromatics fully unfurl. Pair with duck breast, mushroom-stuffed pheasant or a simple dish that lets the wine's detail and length take centre stage.
