From the Lance vineyard in St Andrews, Yarra Valley, with old vines planted in 1976, this is a cabernet of restraint and detail rather than power. Expect mulberry and cassis fruit, cedar and rubbed rosemary on the nose, with violets, lavender and dried herbs adding lift. Fermented on whole berries and aged eleven months in older barriques, the palate is medium-bodied with a crunchy, saline energy and persistent, fine-grained tannins. Tiny-production and precise, it drinks beautifully now but has the structure to hold.
